    Dr. Shahid Qureshi's Keynote Speech  

Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs (OPEN) Karachi, Second Annual Conference 2013, “Building Bridges through Networking” was successfully held at the KSBL Campus on 21st December, 2013. Dr. Shahid Qureshi, Program Director IBA-CED, on the invitation of Sindh Enterprise Development Fund (SBoI), delivered the key note address on “Entrepreneurship in Practice” based on the experience at IBA-CED. He also gave a presentation on Agri-Based Entrepreneurship Development Program of IBA-CED, in the Agri-preneurship session during the conference. In which EDP program was presented as a success story, by exemplifying Aftab Hussain, student of EDP batch II who have successfully launched Grinded Red Chilli business within a span of 4 months.

    Business Startups and Crowd Funding Events:  

With the passing out of the second batch of EDP students, a unique crowd funding event was organized where students presented their business plans. This included those plans that have already launched and some that were in the process. The event was held on 12th and 13th of November in the G&T Auditorium and was attended by angel investors, business community, students and faculty members. The platform was thus provided whereby every student got their chance to pitch potential investors into investing in their business and thereby becoming a sleeping partner in the business, whilst at the same time enjoying their equity worth share of profit. CED raised more than Rs 350,000 for the launch of POM FRITES and PAPA JOBS launched by Shah Aun Hussain and Shan Nasir respectively, which was a resounding success on the IBA Main campus.

    Chief Guest for event: Ms. Shehla Raza, Deputy Speaker Sindh Assembly  

The chief guest for the event Ms. Shehla Raza arrived in the event and shared with the audience very inspiring memories and her struggles in life which then ultimately paved way for her to climb the success ladder. She motivated the students to become ardent in their vision, to work hard in all spheres of life and to adopt a simple style of living. The message that she conveyed was in fact practical applications of all the teachings of the EDP program.Her speech left a strong impact on the audience who were amazed to hear details of her hard work and personal sacrifices,via which she was able to achieve a high rank within her political and professional domains.

    Crowd Funding of Rs. 500,000 for Ultimate Fitness Solutions (UFS)  

Ultimate Fitness Solutions was a concept that was given by one of the EDP student who is currently working as a fitness trainer with senior CEOs in the industry since 2007. The business plan was to open a fitness center in the heart of DHA whereby customized fitness services in the form of aerobics and exercises will be provided to clients in order for them to remain healthy and active. The business concept was appreciated by many investors and as a result, the idea was able to generate commitments of Rs. 500,000 from investors. Thus investors became owner in the business and will be sharing profit/loss up to 40% of profits.

With a view to tapping into the creative potential within IBA, Mr Khalid Awan, Chairman TCS Group of Companies, has offered to a select group of individuals identified by the IBA-CED, certain entrepreneurial opportunities that exist in the following areas of his business:

    EDP Program Announcement  

Entrepreneurship Development Program is a special program designed by IBA-CED in collaboration with Sindh Board of Investment (SBI) for promotion of agricultural entrepreneurship in Sindh. This diploma program has been developed with special focus on development of analytical and management skills of the students. Class room training will be done under the supervision of the IBA faculty, with a rigorous schedule for accomplishment of the goals.

    Succeeding in a Man's World!

The IBA Center for Entrepreneurship Development (IBA-CED) strives to promote the spirit of "entrepreneurship" in Pakistan. Keeping aligned with this very endeavor, a full day workshop was held on February 23, 2013. The participants were aspiring female entrepreneurs from diverse walks of life and with versatile dreams. From hosting cooking classes, designing jewellery, to owning an in-house homeopathic clinic - the business ideas were rich and full of potential. Led by Ms. Maheen Ghauri, Ms. Lalarukh Ejaz, and Dr. Amber Gul Rashid, various key issues regarding female entrepreneurship and empowerment in the Pakistani context were discussed. Some of the participants were budding entrepreneurs seeking advice and consultancy. The conductors of the workshop provided guidance and stressed on the importance of research, marketing, and financial options that goes into running one's own business.

    Technology Entrepreneurship for Faculty  

Technology entrepreneurship workshop was held at the Centre for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), IBA, Main Campus on the 13th and 14th of March, 2013, with the collaboration of British Council and Coventry University (UK). Around 50 faculty members from different universities of Karachi, Sukkur, Quetta and Islamabad participated in this workshop. The emphasis was on entrepreneurship as a manageable process that can be applied in the technology sector. The workshop provided hands on experience to faculty members on entrepreneurship teaching, pedagogy and curriculum development.  It helped in bringing people from all over Pakistan to share their experiences, interact, collaborate, and to later adopt the takeaways from the workshop within their respective institutions.

Karachi, January 9, 2013: The findings of the second GEM Pakistan’s study pioneered by the Center for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) were released in a public ceremony on Wednesday, January 09, 2013, at the IBA Main Campus, University Road, Karachi.

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (known as GEM) is an international research initiative to promote entrepreneurship and is implemented in more than 80 nations. The GEM studies are conducted under the auspices of the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association and Entrepreneurs. Policy makers and educators around the world are using the GEM reports to create awareness and enhance learning about the entrepreneurial process
Congratulating the GEM team on completion of this report, Dean and Director IBA Dr. Ishrat Husain said, “I am confident that the research findings will help our policy makers, researchers and educators in Pakistan to create awareness and enhance learning about the entrepreneurial process with the aim of creating new opportunities for our aspiring entrepreneurs by improving support for new and innovative business ventures.”
