Entrepreneurship Educators Symposium 2016

Yet, another feather added to our cap as IBA proudly stood as a pioneer and flag holder institution in promoting entrepreneurship education in Pakistan. This was accomplished when academicians from nearly all the major universities were gathered at IBA Main campus for an event named as "International Entrepreneurship Educators Symposium 2016". The symposium was held from 21st March 2016 till 22nd March 2016. The official beginning was the welcome dinner arranged at Visting Faculty Residence situated in IBA premises. The excitement and enthusiasm of all the participants were evident. Everyone was waiting eagerly for the main event. In the opening remarks Dr. Shahid Qureshi, Program Director CED, IBA welcomed all the participants and the resource persons on behalf of the IBA fraternity and introduced the objectives and schedule of the symposium. Dr. Qureshi warm heartedly welcomed Dr. Miles Davis for his availability along with the other resource persons.

On 21st March 2016, pre symposium sessions were conducted by Dr. Shahid Qureshi and Dr. Miles K. Davis to make the participants well acquainted with the entrepreneurship pedagogical tools. The greater emphasis was placed on how entrepreneurship can be included in the traditional teaching methods involved in different disciplines. The sessions were very interactive and interesting where the participants found an opportunity to have hands on the case studies associated with entrepreneurship pedagogy. Later on, the floor became open for Q&A sessions by the instructors where real world and relevant examples were discussed and shared. In the evening the participants enjoyed an excursion to the Clifton beach followed by a dinner at Karachi Foods.

On 22nd March 2016, the symposium was officially inaugurated. It was finally the day for which everybody was anxiously waiting. This majestic event was inaugurated by Dr. Saeed Ghani, Acting Dean and Director, IBA Karachi. During his inaugural speech Dr. Ghani highlighted the importance of entrepreneurial development for the community and country. He also highlighted some of the developments and achievements made by IBA CED. After the inaugural speech the first key note session was delivered by Dr. Asad Zaman, Honorable Vice Chancellor, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics. Dr. Zaman talked about the significance of entrepreneurship education in the light of Islam. Dr. Zaman also highlighted the significance of entrepreneurship education in the contemporary world. This was followed by another key note session by Dr. Amanda Bullough, Assistant Professor of Management & President, Women in the Academy of International Business (WAIB), University of Delaware. Dr. Amanda during his lecture shared how women can be made as successful entrepreneurs. She also shared one of her manuscript in which she proposed an entrepreneurship pedagogy model on the basis of which entrepreneurship courses can be designed. While in the end, the key resource person of this event Prof. Dr. Miles K. Davis, Dean, Shenandoah University discussed the status of entrepreneurship in the light of Islamic principles and teachings. Souvenirs were distributed in the end to all the key note speakers by the Dean and Director, IBA.

After the key note sessions, panel discussions were conducted. The first panel discussion addressed the 'Importance of Ecosystems in Promoting Entrepreneurship'. The panelist included Mr. Afaque Ahmed, from the Karachi Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship (KITE), Mr. Malik Ahmed Jalal, from The Aman Foundation, Mr. Talib Karim, from the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) and Dr. Nisar Ahmed Siddiqui, of Sukkur IBA and Dr. Zakiuddin Ahmed of Organization of Pakistani Entrepreneurs (OPEN) Karachi, as the moderator of the discussion.

The second panel discussion was based on 'The Role of Incubators in Fostering Entrepreneurship'. Farzal Dojki of Dotzero, Adnan Faisal, NUST Technology Incubation Center (TIC), Mr. Ahsan Mirza of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Dr. Muhammad Shahryar Shahid from LUMS, Dr, Faisal F. Khan, Director and Assistant Professor, Institute of Integrative Biosciences, CECOS University, were its panelists and Ms. Jehan Ara of P@SHA was the moderator. The panelists showed greater concern about the significance of entrepreneurship education to achieve self-sustainability.

Mr. Gerrit Ribbink, Technical Team Lead Entrepreneurship, Enclude Solutions shared the experiences associated with WomenX program and chalked out the impact. While Dr. Xavier Cirera, Economist, World Bank discussed the findings of WomenX Karachi in a base line survey of Women Entrepreneurs in Karachi.

In the context of entrepreneurship education in Pakistan, Dr. Shahryar from LUMS let the academicians to learn how entrepreneurship can be taught. He made this by sharing his experiences associated with the offering of Entrepreneurship course at LUMS. Dr. Shahryar's presentation was very attracting and provided a starting point to all the participants followed by an interesting view over Bio Tech based entrepreneurial ventures by Dr. Faisal F. Khan, CECOS University.

During last session faculty members of CED, IBA shared their methodologies and offerings of entrepreneurial trainings at IBA. These informative sessions were conducted by Dr. Kamran Mumtaz, Mr. Asif Jaffer, Dr. Najam Anjum and Dr. Imran Khan which were highly regarded and applauded by the participants.

In the end, souvenirs and plaques were distributed to the resource persons and the management team of the symposium. Dr. Shahid Qureshi, Director CED IBA praised its team members with the highest regards and tribute for their hard work and coordination for this successful event. The IBA CED team comprised of Mr. Fawad Mahdi, Rao Israr Ahmed, Mr. Azad Ahmed, Mr. Muhammad Talha Azeem and Ms. Soha Zulfiqar. The team received a token of appreciation from Dr. Xavier Cirera and Prof. Dr. Miles K. Davis.

As a whole, the symposium was marked as a wonderful and informative gathering of academicians from all over the Pakistan which certainly will act as a foundation step in promoting entrepreneurship education in Pakistan.
