IBA International Entrepreneurship Educators Symposium (IEES) 2018

August 10th & 11th, 2018: The IBA AMAN Center for Entrepreneurial Development (CED) was created in 2010 to play a major role in promoting entrepreneurship in Pakistan and to contribute in the development of an entrepreneurial eco-system. In light of the various successful projects conducted by the Center, this year IBA AMAN CED organized a 2 days' symposium for entrepreneurship educators at IBA, Karachi. The purpose of this symposium was to prepare the future entrepreneurship faculty members by sharing the latest developments happening at Darden, Babson, Stanford, China, Holland, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Canada and India etc.

The 1st day of the symposium commenced with an introductory speech of Dr. Shahid Qureshi (Program Director, CED). The topic under discussion was “Discussion on Global & National Entrepreneurship Education Eco-systems”. Dr. Shahid explained the emerging Entrepreneurship model worldwide and the role of IBA AMAN CED in bringing about an entrepreneurial revolution within the country. He elaborated, “Over the years this Center has successfully developed Entrepreneurship Teaching Material, Entrepreneurship Research, an indigenous Entrepreneurship model called “E+ (Entrepreneurship Plus) Model”, and various Outreach programs (including: Women Entrepreneurship, Technology Entrepreneurship, Kids Entrepreneurship).” He further stated, “IBA AMAN CED helps people to recognize their bird-in-hand (who you are, what you know and whom you know), and how to start businesses with the least amount of resources.”

The session was further graced by the presence of various national guest speakers hailing from different universities including: Dr. Khurram Sharif (Qatar University, Qatar), Dr. Idrees Khawaja (Air University, Islamabad), Mr. Mehdi Hasnain (CEO- Hunar Foundation), Dr. Beenish Malik (University of Baluchistan, Quetta), Mr. Sarfraz Kiyani (FAST, Islamabad), Mr. Ikhtair Khoso (IBA-Sukkur University), Dr. Gohar Saleem (IM Sciences, Peshawar), Mr. Imran Qadir (University of Haripur, Haripur), Mr. Ekhlaque Ahmed (IOBM, Karachi), Mr. Jawaid Qureshi (SZABIST, Karachi). Dr. Zubair Shahid (Iqra University, Karachi). These guest speakers had a panel discussion on how entrepreneurship can become a source of economic growth in the country and how academia can play a major role in bringing about this entrepreneurial revolution.

Building upon the discussion of the 1st Day, the IEES 2018 conducted the 2nd day of the conference in the G & T Auditorium at IBA Main Campus. The session was attended by around 200 participants including: national & international faculty, international students attending the IBA Entrepreneurship Summer School (hailing from Germany, Tunisia, Mexico etc.) and various other entrepreneurs running small-scale ventures within Pakistan. The topic under discussion was “Entrepreneurship Education as a Force-of-Change for Pakistan”. The session commenced with a welcome speech from Dr. Farukh Iqbal (Executive Director, IBA Karachi) who welcomed the faculty members and International participants and appreciated this initiative which can play a major role in bridging the gap between institutions. This was followed by a speech of Dr. Ulrike Guelich (Faculty of Social Entrepreneurship, Thailand) who shared her Thailand experiences on entrepreneurship.

Following that, Dr. Shahid Qureshi elaborated further on the indigenous Entrepreneurship Plus (E+) model developed at AMAN CED and the emerging entrepreneurship models in universities like Darden, Babson etc. He stated, “Our purpose is to facilitate the Pakistani youth to build entrepreneurial ventures which are socially, environmentally and ethically sustainable and are working for the well-being of the economy.”

This was followed by a panel discussion on the key learnings and findings of the “National Entrepreneurship Program (NEP)”- a recent initiative of AMAN CED where it launched an entrepreneurship program in cities outside Karachi; in collaboration with 3 partner universities in Gujranwala, Hyderabad and Faisalabad. The panel discussion was attended by IBA Faculty including: Dr. Najam Anjum, Dr. Asif Jaffer and Dr. Imran Khan along with the faculty members from partner universities including: Dr. Osama Naseem (National Textile University – Faisalabad), Mr. Tahir Hussain (GIFT University – Gujranwala), Dr. Zahid Ali (Mehran University – Hyderabad).

The panel discussion was followed by a guest speaker session of a renowned social entrepreneur, Dr. Abdul Bari Khan (CEO of Indus Hospital) who spoke on the topic “How to work without money?.” Dr. Bari stated, “I started off with the minimal amount of resources and eventually built Indus Hospital with a vision of benefitting the humanity.” Following this, Hans Micheal (Faculty of Family Business, Thailand) shared his entrepreneurial views and experiences of Thailand. Next, Dr. Umair Shah (Lecturer at Waterloo University, Canada) shared his entrepreneurial research and experiences in Waterloo. Then, Dr. Asad Zaman (VC Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), Islamabad) took over the podium and enlightened the audience with his talk on “What has gone wrong with our knowledge and what does the faculty needs to unlearn to teach entrepreneurship?.”

The session was followed by Mr. Farhan Hanif’s (CEO of Crown Group of Companies) talk – who shared his story on “How to build a value-based entrepreneurial venture.” Next, Dr. Imran Ashraf (Visiting Faculty at IBA) graced the event with his presence and spoke on the topic of “How can Islamic Finance help to promote entrepreneurship?.”

Lastly, the session concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Shahid Qureshi followed by a certificate distribution ceremony. Moreover, a token of appreciation was given to Mr. Ali Abbas (Board Member of WB by Hemanis – sponsors of the program). The symposium ended while the faculty took an entrepreneurial resolve in which Dr. Shahid Qureshi stated, “Make resolve to promote the entrepreneurial mindset of parsimony, effectuation, innovation, contribution, collaboration, service and harmony,” he added, “Make resolve to make this world a better place by facilitating people to become better human beings which are ethically, socially and environmentally sensitive.”
