Innovation Day - Exon 1.0

May 04, 2018: The AMAN Center for Entrepreneurial Development (AMAN-CED) at Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi, in collaboration with KayDrive, organized Exon Innovation 1.0 Meetup named as "Innovation Day" at the IBA, Main Campus. EXON 1.0 is a new concept that constituted an online project exhibition, that preceded the Innovation Day, which took place from 29th April till May 3rd.

The aim of the event was to encourage students and startups to develop low-cost technology solutions through their projects and ideas. Final year projects from prestigious universities were exhibited such as IBA, FCS, LUMS SBASSE, GIKI, UET, NED, DUET and MUET.

Dr. Farrukh Iqbal, Dean and Director, IBA Karachi attended the event along with other esteemed individuals representing the US Consulate, UNDP, IBM, Shell, State Bank, Nestle, Nest i/o, and HR along with, Senior faculty members of the IBA.

The event commenced with a welcome note by Dr. Sayeed Ghani, Associate Dean IBA, Karachi, followed by a speech by Dr. Kamran Mumtaz, Chairperson, Assistant Professor Management & Head CEDAP, who commented on how Exon is one of the latest production that has received an overwhelming response from across the country on being Pakistan's largest online exhibition.

The guest speaker sessions were delivered by representatives of partner organizations such as Sharikh Rehman, Country Manager IBM. All the speakers stressed on the need of such platforms that not only encourage students to come up with ideas and solutions but also provide them exposure within the Information and Technology Industry.

Next in line, was a panel discussion which was moderated by Kashif Kamran and included respectable panelists such as Ahsan Merchant, Head of Digital Lab, UBL; Asim Iqbal, Director and Network Manager, State bank of Pakistan; Humaira Ashar, Marketing Innovation Lead, Nestle; and Atyab Tahir, Chief Innovation and Financial Inclusion Officer, HBL. The discussion that took place revolved around developing an innovation ecosystem in the country and the role universities can play in fostering this through final year projects.

The event proceeded with pitching session of shortlisted projects and potential startups from participating universities. The selected final year projects were presented in front of a judicial panel and potential sponsors for not only assessing the best project but also as a means to give constructive feedback.

The event concluded with an award distribution ceremony. The teams that won included GoSpark of IBA who presented an application that allows to track in-store customer data and help stores in customer retention; Automo of NED, tracks energy usage and recommends use of appliances based on user budget; and Virtual Changing Room of NED, that allows a customer to try out clothes in a virtual environment, thereby replacing the trial room. The event provided a great opportunity for networking to those interested in information and technology.

AMAN-CED, in the past, has played a strategic role in promoting entrepreneurship in Pakistan. It has also encouraged youth and professionals, who believe in opportunity recognition and new venture creation. Events like Exon 1.0, are a testimony of AMAN-CED's aim to support the creation of new companies that add substantial jobs, incomes, and revenues to Pakistan's economy.
